My Chemical Romance Crochet Halter Top

About This Pattern

In honor of My Chemical Romance’s second studio album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge turning 20 today, I decided to post one of the first patterns I ever made! This pattern uses the fair isle (stranded) colorwork technique and uses 2 colors. It may be a bit difficult for absolute beginners due to the color changes but it is still completely manageable as long as you have good grasp on basic stitches, specifically the single crochet. The pattern given is roughly a size small/medium, but is entirely based on measurements. I made a google sheets that will help you do all the calculations so you can make it in your size as well, just make a copy of it when you open the link :).

Materials

  • 1-2 skein(s) of category #4 medium weight yarn in color 1 of your choice [main color]

  • 1 skein of category #4 medium weight yarn in color 2 of your choice [design color]

  • Crochet hook in size US I-9 / 5.50mm

  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

  • Tape measure for taking your measurements (optional)

Stitches & Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • st - stitch

  • ch - chain loop

  • sc - single crochet

  • dc - double crochet

  • dec - decrease

  • cc - change color

  • fs - front side

  • bs - back side

Tips

  • For a neater edge, don’t put any chains at the end of the rows.

  • When reading the grid, remember you need to alternate the direction you read it for each row to mimic working on the front and backside.

  • Start reading the grid from the bottom left corner, I recommend printing it so you can mark what row you are on and the direction to make it easier.

  • All odd numbered rows are the front side, all even numbered rows are the back side.

  • Remember to keep all the floats on the back side of the yarn.

  • When floating the yarn, I would recommend not going over 4 sts without a float.

  • If you want the top to be longer, add more rows during the first step (rows 1-4).

  • Row 58: Sc 45 (color 1), don’t fasten off just ch 1 and move to the neck strap [45].

Neck strap

This strap should be long enough to slip your head through the loop it creates when the end is connected to the other side of the top, but don’t make it too long or the top will not be flush against your skin.

  • All rows except last: Sc 3, ch 1, turn [3].

  • Last row: Sc 3, ch 1 then cut the yarn with a long enough tail to sew it onto the other side of the top and pull it through to create a knot.

  • Sewing: Thread the yarn tail through the darning needle then align the corner with the corner of the top.

Corset (back)

  • Row 1: Sc in each stitch along the side before the decreases [38]

  • Row 2-#: Dc in each stitch for as many rows as you’d like, the less rows you do the more open your back will be (I did 2 rows of this step) [38].

  • Last row: (Ch 2, skip 3, sc 3) repeat this until the end of the row [38].

  • Corset string: Ch as many as it takes to lace through the holes in your corset back and tie, I did approximately 200 chs.
